What is an “Affirming Church”?

What is an “Affirming Church”? An “Affirming Congregation” is one that has intentionally reflected upon what it means to be inclusive. The congregation is called to evaluate its openness about how the congregation welcomes and includes others within the life and work of the church regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, social or economic status, physical or emotional disabilities, culture or ethnic background. Through the evaluation the goal is to acknowledge the barriers that exist in the congregation that further marginalize people. Upon acknowledging these barriers; the community can strive to eliminate them so we can truly become a welcome and inclusive congregation in Christ’s love.
